Narooma Whales

The concept of coastal-themed Christmas signage for Narooma emerged in 2013 during a broader discussion about sustainable projects and tourism for the town. The Chamber of Commerce president initiated an open community discussion to explore collaboration opportunities with local businesses and community groups. From this, the idea for Christmas decorations with a coastal focus was suggested, and a project plan was developed. A design competition was held across the town, including at Narooma High School, with the theme centred around the sea and what makes Narooma special. The winning designs, chosen by a panel of judges, included a lighthouse, a seal, and Georgia Poyner’s prize-winning whale design.

With funding from IGA Dalmeny and IGA Narooma, materials were secured, and working bees were organised by the Narooma Men’s Shed and community members to create the Christmas Whales. By the 2013 summer holiday season, the first wooden whale decorations were installed around town. Businesses continue to hire the whales for display during the festive season, with the decorations returned afterward for storage and repainting, ensuring this unique coastal tradition thrives each year.
